The Pirates Put Up 10 Runs in the First Inning Against The Cubs

It must be hot out there at Wrigley Field, right? The wind has got to be blowing all funny? Maybe there are bees in the outfield? I dunno, man. There's got to be some excuse for this because the Pittsburgh Pirates just slaughtered the Cubs with an insane 10 runs in the first inning.

It's going to take a minute just to catalogue everything that went down. So let's start from the top.

First, the bases loaded up and Jordan Bell lined an RBI single into right field. The bases then kept loaded, as Osuna lobbed a bounce at the Wrigley's ivy for a two-run double. We're at three now. Then Jordy Mercer stepped up and slapped a grounder into left field between a pair of diving Cubs for a two-run single. Five.

And then—hoo, buddy, and then:

Francisco Cervelli was horngry for some mashed taters, as he served up a helping for four on this beautiful grand slam. Nine.

To add insult to injury—and just so you knew that this had nothing to do with the pressure of the bases being loaded—Andrew McCutcheon lit up a solo homer for a back-to-back jack to round it out to a clean 10.

Cubs pitcher Jon Lester closed out his shame inning, and Chicago is feeling pretty lucky to have found a run—somewhere, somehow—in the second inning. Brutal.
