Wayne Rooney "Knocked Out" Boxing with Phil Bardsley
Wayne Rooney was probably not knocked out boxing with a friend, but he was definitely hanging out with friends in a sleepover-like setting.
It's not clear if Wayne Rooney was actually knocked out in this video—in fact, judging by the laughter immediately after, it's almost certain that he was not knocked out—but what's really interesting about the clip is that one of the most famous athletes in the world is doing the same thing the young fans who love him are doing on a random saturday night. This is probably what a typical sleepover with your friends looked like when you were a kid: everyone hanging around a basement-like area or den, no sneakers on, and unleashing the testosterone coursing through your bodies.
It wasn't boxing for my friends and I, we played basketball with a mini hoop and nerf ball, and we had to play from our knees. But aside from the sport, it's exactly like the sleepovers I went to when I was 10 years old. Except these guys are in their late twenties/early thirties and dress nicer. Exactly the same, except they're adults.
The video is reportedly from February 22, during a stretch where Rooney was given a couple of days off. Neither Rooney nor the club commented on the video, but he played six days later and scored twice against Sunderland.
And check out his celebration when he scored against Tottenham hours after the story broke.
