Tennessee's Disastrous Coaching Search Results in Massive Self-Own

The Volunteers, still coach-less, will henceforth be known as the Tennessee Browns.

It's hard to tell exactly who painted up Tennessee's famous rock this time, but it's just about the most righteous diss that someone could deliver after a very long week. No team exemplifies the failure and revolving door that the Vols have endured in the past decade quite like the Cleveland Browns. And now the rock thinks so too.

Tennessee's rock has hosted murals to welcome in football recruits, troll incoming teams, and, yes, send vile hate messages. But earlier today, it bore this little beauty of a troll, courtesy of Kelsey Leyrer at WVLT:

But let's just break down what the rock is saying for a second, shall we?

The Tennessee football team hasn't posted double digit wins since 2007. This year, they went 4-8, which led to the firing of their head coach Butch Jones. The search to replace Jones was led by athletic director John Currie, and it was so bungled that Currie himself was fired today.

Here's what happened: Last weekend, Currie agreed to hire Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano for the job. Schiano had also been the head coach at Rugers and for the NFL's Tampa Bay Bucaneers. More crucially, he was an assistant at Penn State when Jerry Sandusky was molesting children in the team's football facilities. Fellow Penn State assistant Mike McQueary testified that a colleague told him Schiano said he saw Sandusky molest a child in the showers but never reported Sandusky.

When Schiano's imminent hiring was leaked, Tennessee fans understandably fans rose up in a massive wave of protest. ( The Rock was painted to read, "Schiano covered up child rape at Penn State.” By Monday, the Schiano deal was off.

Since then we've seen plenty of offers rejected by people too smart to accept the job. Mike Gundy was reportedly unhappy at Oklahoma State, but not unhappy enough to condemn himself to a season of Vols football. Then there was a rejection from University of Florida head coach Dan Mullen, followed by another from Purdue's head coach Jeff Brohm, NC State's head coach Dave Doeren, and then Duke's head coach David Cutcliffe.

Finally Currie found the man crazy enough to take the job: Washington State head coach Mike Leach. But before Currie and Leach could put pen to paper, Currie was flown back to Knoxville and summarily fired.

Former coach Philip Fulmer will reportedly replace Currie. It's unclear who will be the next coach for the Vols. But it's fair to say Tennessee has hit… rock bottom?
