Falcons Coach Asks Combine Prospect if He Likes Men

Out of bounds.

The NFL scouting combine is a weird-ass meat market, where human beings are broken down into sprint times, long jump distances, and bench reps. It all kind of makes sense for how to gauge performance on the field. But asking a player's sexuality? That's just, well. That's just out of bounds.

Former Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple, ranked 22 overall by ESPN's Todd McShay, spoke with Comcast SportsNet about the weird kinds of questions coaches ask. According to Apple, one of the Falcons coaches asked him, "do you like men?" Apple said he answered, "no," to which he claims the coach responded, "'Well if you're going to come to Atlanta, you just gotta know that sometimes that's how it is out here, you gotta get used to it.'"

Apple gave the coach the benefit of the doubt, saying "I guess he was joking, but I guess they just ask you most of these questions to see how you're going to react, or if you're paying attention, I guess." Regardless of whether it was a question to throw Apple off balance or not, it's not like the coach was protecting the diversity of Atlanta by asking Apple if he was gay. It's also not the coach's business.

Needless to say, the news leaked out and Falcons coach Dan Quinn released a statement about the interaction.

"I am really disappointed in the question that was asked by one of our coaches," Quinn said. "I have spoken to the coach that interviewed Eli Apple and explained to him how inappropriate and unprofessional this was. I have reiterated this to the entire coaching staff and I want to apologize to Eli for this even coming up. This is not what the Atlanta Falcons are about and it is not how we are going to conduct ourselves."

That coach might want to find a new bag of tricks for Q&A on combine day.
