Red Sox Prospect In Critical Condition After Crash In Florida

20-year-old Boston Red Sox prospect Kevin Steen is in critical condition after another vehicle crashed into his SUV in Lehigh Acres, Fla.

According to FOX 4 News in Fort Myers, Fla., the incident occurred around 11:46 PM Wednesday night. Steen was driving his SUV when a car in an opposite lane crossed the median, went airborne and slammed into the front of his vehicle before catching fire. Images from the accident indicate it was a violent impact, and the driver of the other vehicle died on the scene. Police have not identified the name of the driver.

Steen, a ninth-round pick for Boston in 2014, was taken to nearby Lee Memorial Hospital. He had just completed his second season with the club's low-A affiliate in Lowell, Mass, where he started 14 games in 2016, and is in Florida now for extended spring training.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire Red Sox organization are with minor league player Kevin Steen, who sustained serious injuries in a car accident in Florida last night. The club will update his condition at the appropriate time," the Red Sox said in a statement.
