A Swansea Fan Made off with Jordi Amat's Shirt—and a Sports Scientist Wants its GPS Back

One of the detriments of giving away one of today's modern jerseys.

To the lucky fan that picked up @JordiAmat5 @SwansOfficial shirt at the game could you please return the GPS unit in the back RT

Behind every sports team is a team of nerds crunching numbers. Yes, the jocks and the nerds binary isn't just relegated to 80's high school movies. It persists even in the EPL. Today, after Swansea jock Jordi Amat ran himself silly around West Ham for an ultimate 4-1 victory (though the center back had no hand in the tally), he gave away his shirt. A classic celebration, sure. But this is the modern era. That shirt had science in it, and now the nerds want science back.

You see, jerseys nowadays are equipped with GPS units that track mileage of players on the pitch, to get data down for things like charting a player's endurance and efficiency, or, say, making sure your video games are accurate. The only problem is that you need that GPS unit to chart that data. So when Amat handed off his shirt to some lucky fan, he also handed off his statistical existence, and that fan very well may have messed up the numbers.

@j_northeast @JordiAmat5 @SwansOfficial According to your gps Jordi, you covered 47miles today and stopped off at a kfc on your way home??

Amat likely ran as fast as a car driving back to put a shirt behind glass in a case. Good luck, Swansea's head of sports science and fitness Jonny Northeast. Chances are you'll be missing a bit of data in your set.
