In the early morning hours of day of the Super Bowl, Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and another man were both struck by a suspected drunk driver while standing in the shoulder lane, according the Indy Star. Jackson, 26, was pronounced dead shortly after 4am by Indiana State Police.Jackson reportedly left the vehicle—a ride share—because he was feeling sick, and Jeffrey Monroe, his ride-share driver, was also out of the vehicle when the two were struck. The vehicle was a Ford F-150, and the incident occurred on I-70 in Indianapolis. Police reported that one of the two men was hit and "thrown into the center lane;" then, as a trooper, Ty Mays, arrived on the scene, he slowed his vehicle and struck the body of one victim.The driver of the truck was identified as Alex Cabrera Gonsales of Indianapolis, and allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot. Police suspect that Gonsales was intoxicated at the time.The Colts sent out a statement shortly after Jackson's death:
Jackson, an Atlanta native, was affectionately called "Pound Cake" and was a championship finalist in high school wrestling. He later went on play football at Georgia Southern as a walk on.
