Chicago Blackhawks Lock Up Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane For Forever

Chicago Blackhawks just opened the bank.

The Chicago Blackhawks have taken care of their own. The contracts of dynamic duo Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were set to expire after the upcoming season, but the pair both agreed on identical eight-year extensions worth a reported $84 million a piece that will run through the 2022-23 seasons.

The $10.5 million cap hits on both players are the first to surpass the $10 million threshold in the NHL's cap era.

It's easy to argue that Toews and Kane should be paid as much, if not more, than any player in the league. Up front, it might make the Hawks work a little harder to stay under the cap, but as that number goes up, the team will gain (breathing) room to add to the roster. They needed to lock these two up and they did, even if the money is on the large side (this is the NHL, after all).

But when you look at what the pair has done together in just a short amount of time: three Olympic Medals, two Conn Smythe trophies, a Selke, a Calder, and, oh, yeah, that's right, those two Stanley Cup wins, the future looks incredibly bright.
