Sometimes, a loss is better for the future.

Well, this is certainly a sticky pickle the 49ers have found themselves in. In most cases, a win is great. Like, simply the best. Given the fact that beloved coach Jim Tomsula's head is allegedly on the chopping block, you'd think that ending his season on a win would be good news. That is, unless you're concerned about the draft.

After what would be their final drive in overtime, the St. Louis Rams positioned themselves for a 48-yard potential game-winning field goal, and 49ers cornerback Dontae Johnson rounded the line with a horizontal leap that made for a nasty double-handed block. Niners kicker Phil Dawson would later come in on the subsequent drive and land a 23-yard field goal that would seal the 49ers fate as victors.

Awesome, right? Well, thanks to the 49ers miraculous overtime win, now San Francisco has been dropped from 4th to 7th in draft position. That's three points, and three positions. Without a chance at making the playoffs, the difference between 4-12 and 5-11 has never felt more real.
