An LA Cop Kept a Knife That Was Found Buried Outside O.J. Simpson's House

A retired cop has been hanging on to a knife found buried at O.J. Simpson's house for a very long time.

This is some crazy, crazy shit right here. According to TMZ, a construction worker who was at the site of O.J. Simpson's former Brentwood mansion reportedly found a knife buried in the ground outside the house and handed it over to an off-duty cop who was working security for a film shoot. That off-duty cop then pocketed the knife and kept it for himself.

According to reports at the time, the house was demolished in 1998, but it's not clear exactly when the knife was discovered. TMZ's sources range from "several years ago" to the time of the demolition. Whatever the timeline, this traffic cop held on to a knife taken from one of the most infamous crime scenes in recent memory for the better part of two decades without anyone knowing. Then he got a little ridiculous.

In late January of this year, after the cop retired from the LAPD, he contacted a friend who worked in LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division (RHD). The cop told the friend about the knife and said he was getting it framed to put on his wall. He wanted his friend to get the DR (Departmental Record) number for the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ronald Goldman murder case, which he planned on engraving in the frame.

What an insane bit of memorabilia to keep in your man cave. Here's my signed Kobe Bryant jersey, that's a limited edition Vin Scully bobblehead, oh, and this is possibly the knife that O.J. Simpson murdered Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman with. Guy found it buried in the backyard. No one knows I have it.

Unfortunately it will not hold a place of distinction on his wall. The friend in the Homicide Division was taken aback by this request and passed the information up to his superiors, who promptly demanded he turn over the knife. He did and the LAPD have reportedly been secretly investigating whether this was the murder weapon. TMZ also reports that some cops who have looked the knife over think there could be blood residue on it, but it's so rusted and stained that it's hard to tell. LAPD is currently testing it for fingerprints, hair and other DNA information.

O.J. has been found not-guilty for the murders so under the legal theory of double jeapardy, he could not be tried again for the same crimes. Police have confirmed that a knife was found on the property, but did not comment on any other aspects of the TMZ report.
