Rivals Help Exhausted Boston College Runner Across Finish Line

Yes, that is a huge loss for the other runners' times, but apparently, it was more important to help Adams see it all through. Hugs all around.

There's a strange quality to watching something that would be laughably cheesy in a Disney movie as it happen in real life. In a film, it feels like the script was written poorly, or that it betrays a character's complexity, but when it happens in real life, someone is actually performing that act—and they really didn't have to. But here we are, witnessing a sports-movie cliché play out in real time. And it is, in all actuality, very heartwarming.

During the ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Boston College runner Madeline Adams keeled over from exhaustion just a few dozen yards from the finish line. The announcer mentioned a brutal hill in the course, and it's believable, based on Adams' inability to even keep her legs underneath her. Shortly after Adams dropped to the ground, runner Evie Tate from Clemson came in to scoop her up, taking her under the arm and lifting her off the ground. But, likely exhausted herself, Tate had trouble carrying her alone. Cue up Louisville runner Rachel Pease, who joined in to take Adams' other arm and help her across the finish line.

Yes, that is a huge loss for Tate and Pease's times, but apparently, it was more important to help Adams see it all through. Hugs all around.
