Report: Ronaldo Buys 50 Shades of Grey Apartment

Whips and chains and... soccer balls

Last week, news broke that Cristiano Ronaldo, the plucked, heroic, charitable, tanned, coiffed, quick, constantly-preening physical specimen who also plays soccer, plunked down a few million dollars on a pad in Manhattan. That the apartment is in Trump Tower, one of presidential candidate Donald Trump's properties, gave the story a bit of a bump in sports-celebrity news circles. But it didn't have much depth, much staying power—at least, not at first.

Over the weekend, The New York Post did a little digging, and boy did they hit pay dirt! The new apartment is allegedly the same one "that '50 Shades' novel author E.L. James used as a model for the notorious, bondage bachelor pad of her fictional sex sadist character, Christian Grey, a source said."

Why the Post needs to give a source anonymity for this little tidbit is a question I can't answer. (Although, if I had to guess, I'd say Ronaldo is the source.) Why Cristiano Ronaldo would buy the very apartment that inspired the kinkiest novel to come out in a while, on the other hand, is a question I'm not sure we need to answer. I mean, we're talking about Ronaldo. Have you seen his statue? Here's a relevant picture:

But the story isn't all kink and sex. As the Post points out, the property transaction could have some interesting sporting consequences:

"Ronaldo, who is under contract to Real Madrid through 2018, has expressed interest in coming to America's Major League Soccer.

"Sports Illustrated has reported that Los Angeles is his most likely destination, but the apartment purchase brings up the titillating possibility of the star playing for New York City FC or the Red Bulls."
