Ryan Vogelsong Hit by Pitch in Head, Carted off Field

Ryan Vogelsong had to be carted off the field after he got hit by a pitch in the head.

In the second inning of a make up game against the Colorado Rockies, Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was hit in the head by Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles. The ball looked to actually sneak just under the bill of Vogelsong's helmet and made direct contact with his brow, making a gruesome sound. Vogelsong immediately went down to the ground, clutching his face, and remained motionless for a while. The scary moment came seconds after one of the broadcasters made an unfortunate joke when asked what Lyles should do in his approach to Vogelsong. "Don't hit him," he said.

The Pirates training staff came out and began looking after him and kept him immobilized for a while longer before helping him sit up. After about two minutes, Vogelsong was standing up and helped to the back of a cart and taken to a standing ambulance out behind the right field fence. Presumably he is being taken to an area hospital to get checked out, but there has not yet been any further information released. We will update as soon as more information is available.
