Michigan Basketball Team Involved in Runway Accident After Plane Aborts Takeoff

Everyone is safe, but the Michigan men's basketball team had quite the scare trying to get to D.C. for the Big Ten tournament.

First things first, everyone is safe. Still, though, this sounds very scary. On Wednesday, Michigan's men's basketball team had a flight to Washington, D.C., where they will play in the Big Ten tournament. Despite severe wind, the plane tried to take off, only to then abort takeoff shortly thereafter. The plane struggled to stop, however, before sliding off the runway entirely.

Here's the statement from Michigan's SID Tom Wywrot:

The Michigan men's basketball team plane was involved in an accident Wednesday afternoon. After attempting to take off in high winds, takeoff was aborted, and after strong braking, the plane slid off the runway. The plan sustained extensive damage but everyone on board was safely evacuated and is safe. The team is making alternate travel plans.

The Big Ten tournament tips off today, but Michigan is not scheduled to play until Thursday afternoon against Illinois.
