Meet the Bad News Bears, AA Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals

When no one is covering any of the bases, interesting things can happen.

Randy Arozarena of the Springfield Cardinals—the AA Texas League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals—did not hit the ball much past the pitcher's mound in Thursday night's game against the Midland RockHounds, but wound up on third base anyway. Thanks to a comedy of errors that kicked off with first baseman Viosergy Rosa booting an outwardly rinky-dink pop fly, Arozarena was able to scoot around the bases unperturbed by usual baseball banalities like "defenders" or "competence."

The best part is the moment when the third baseman watches Arozarena head for second and is just walking that slow, defeated walk like man, can't believe he's gonna wind up on second base off that and then he realizes oh shit, I'm the third baseman….and I'm over by the pitcher's mound. It's a real Luke-realizing-the-Empire-has-just-offed-his-aunt-and-uncle moment.

It was ruled an error since it hit Rosa's glove (and for other reasons, as discussed earlier) and Arozarena made it safely to third. He was eventually driven in by a Magneuris Sierra double to tie the score at 1-1. Before being promoted to AA at the end of June, the Cuban speedster hit .295, stolen 6 bases, hit 4 home runs, and driven in 16 in 21 games at Class A.

The Cardinals won, 2-1.
