Open-wheel racing star Dave Steele, 42, was killed in a sprint car racing crash last night in Bradenton, Florida. Steele's death was confirmed by Desoto Speedway—the site of the crash—on their Facebook page late in the evening.

Steele was competing in the Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series at the 3/8-mile paved oval in an awinged race, when he attempted to get around lapped traffic and got tangled up and crashed, Fox News says that SpeedSport.com reported (though their link is currently not working).

Steele won back-to-back USAC Silver Crown championships in 2004 and 2005, and won the 2001 and 2003 Turkey Night Grand Prix midget car races.

"Desoto Speedway owners and staff are saddened by tonight's passing of David Steele in the Sprint car feature," Desoto Speedway's post said. "Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends who were all in attendance, to see him try to win his 100th Florida race."
