For the second consecutive year, Sam Querrey knocked out the defending champion at Wimbledon. Last year, he upset Novak Djokovic—in four sets—in the third round. This year, he stunned Andy Murray in five sets to reach the semifinal. The 29-year-old American can finally check off "get to a Grand Slam semifinal" from his to-do list, and he did it against the No. 1-ranked player in the sport.
Murray appeared to be nursing a hip injury he suffered in the lead-up to Wimbledon, which surely played a part in Querrey's comeback from down two sets to one. But Querrey, as he did with Djokovic the year before, used his serve to great effect with 27 aces. He has 126 in his five matches, which leads the tournament.Querrey, ranked 28th in the world, is the lowest-ranked player to defeat Murray at Wimbledon. He awaits the winner of Marin Čilić and Gilles Müller on Court 1. Čilić is cruising in the fifth set, which is a bit of a bummer because we could have been looking at semifinal between Wimbledon's giant killers: the man who beat Andy Murray versus the man who beat Rafael Nadal in the tournament's most thrilling match.Still, an American in the semis is kind of a big deal.
