On Thursday, Joe West—the umpire you know by name because he is an umpire who wants you to know him by name—got into a ridiculous staring contest with Madison Bumgarner. The Giants tall tale character was upset with West's strike zone and West doesn't need an excuse to put himself in the spotlight, so they spent 17 seconds staring each other down. It was high comedy and thoroughly embarrassing for officials in all sports.Last night, Dodgers shortstop Jimmy Rollins decided to have some fun with West and after sliding into third for a triple, he asked for time. He then locked eyes with West for another staring contest before eventually breaking kayfabe and laughing it off. Umpires, West especially, are renowned for their senses of humor, so this probably went over well.[MLB]
