Pirates Turn First 4-5-4 Triple Play in Baseball History

The Pirates turned the first 4-5-4 triple play in baseball history against Yadier Molina and the Cardinals.

In the second inning against the Cardinals, Vance Worley induced an historically weird triple play. With Jason Heyward and Jhonny Peralta on second and third, respectively, Yadier Molina lined out to second baseman Neil Walker who made a nice play on the slicing ball just to record the first out. He then threw to third base to double-up Peralta who got too far off the bag. At that point, confusion briefly set in because neither Heyward, nor third baseman Jung Ho Hang seemed to know how many outs there were. Heyward just sort of hung around near third base, and Kang peeled off like he was going into the dugout.

Worley was still out there directing traffic and eventually everyone figured out there was still one more out to be had, and Kang threw back to Walker at second base to record the first ever 4-5-4 triple play in baseball history and the Pirates second triple play in as many years. Triple plays are always a bit of an oddity and usually require some kind of brain cramp on at least someone's part, but it's still very strange to see a triple play entirely on the left side of the infield, with first base open.

The Pirates beat the Cardinals 7-5.
