Oklahoma State Wins Thanks To Last-Minute Punt Return

Oklahoma State beat intra-state rival Oklahoma thanks to a punt return made possible by their own penalty.

But for a running into the kicker penalty called on Oklahoma State, this game-changing play doesn't even happen. After a three-and-out clock-killing series, Oklahoma punted on fourth-and-14 with one minute and ten seconds left in a 35-28 game. The Cowboys rushed the punt and nearly blocked it, but in the process ran into the kicker, earning a five-yard penalty. Tyreek Hill called a fair catch on the play, so even if the penalty was not called, Oklahoma St. would have taken over on their own 15-yard line with one minute left to play. Instead, the Sooners had to punt again and, hoo boy, did that not work out.

Hill, a sprinter, burst through the Sooners coverage and returned the punt 92 yards for the score, bringing OSU within an extra point of forcing overtime. The snap on the extra point got a little hairy, but they were able to convert and tie the game. The Cowboys went on to win in overtime after Oklahoma missed a 44-yard field goal with the opening possession. Ben Grogan hit the winner for Oklahoma State from 21 yards out to save their season and get the Cowboys bowl eligible, all because they broke the rules.
