Yasiel Puig Turns Routine Single into an Adventurous Double

Yasiel Puig can make anything exciting.

In the fifth inning against the Arizona Puke Covered Trash Bags Diamondbacks, Yasiel Puig hit what was by all rights a single to left field. But with the D-Backs playing him virtually at the warning track, Puig was not happy with just a single. So he motored his ass to second and actually forced a pretty close play. Jean Segura was camped out on the shortstop side of the bag, ready to whip around for the tag, which forced Puig to slide around and try to grab hold of the second base side. He could not hold on—more on that in a minute—and slid past the bag, beginning what could best be described as a shell game of which hand was going to grab for the base. He first went right, but Segura followed him, so then Puig switched it up to his left hand and was ruled safe.

Arizona challenged the call, and after a lengthy review it was upheld, despite this angle, which appears to show Puig grabbing on to Segura's glove instead of the bag on his first attempt.

It's possible his wrist hit the bag before his fingers hit the glove and the umps didn't feel it rose to the level of definitive video evidence needed to overturn the call on the field. Either way, the call stood and Adrian Gonzalez followed the play up with a fly out to left field for the final out of the inning, so we're all winners here.
