A Series of Uncharacteristic Callouts From Frankie Edgar Ends in Social Media Meltdown

Edgar has made it very clear he wants to fight Conor McGregor. But, it appears the posts from his social media accounts may not have come from The Answer himself.

Since starching Chad Mendes earlier this month, Frankie Edgar has rightfully earned himself a crack at the newly-crowned featherweight king of the UFC, Conor McGregor.

But, with McGregor's camp and the UFC still undecided as to whether the Irishman will move up in weight and fight for the lightweight title against Rafael Dos Anjos, or take the Edgar pairing, the New Jersey native has upped his social media game by calling out McGregor to try and get this fight booked sooner rather than later while everything is still up in the air.

Shortly after McGregor's impressive win over Jose Aldo, Edgar took to Instagram to remind the Dubliner that he's after his newly-earned belt. After that, the social media activity slowed as talk of McGregor moving up to lightweight intensified.

However, over the last day, Edgar's Twitter account posted a string of uncharacteristic, poorly-written tweets calling out the new featherweight champ to generate some interest in their inevitable contest.

Poorly written "Frankie" tweets:

Dana promise me a title shot and this is what I'm gonna get I will not fight anybody else but for the title — Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar)December 24, 2015

He will gas with me to but I will never gas and he know it — Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar)December 24, 2015

Why doesn't he want to fight me ask concert why he doesn't want to fight me — Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar)December 24, 2015

When he finally agree to fight me I will take his soul — Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar)December 24, 2015

I beat bj Swanson, cub, Mendez, shirk, who did he beat outside Aldo — Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar)December 24, 2015

This dude has been ducking me but he can't duck me for the rest of his life — Frankie Edgar (@FrankieEdgar)December 24, 2015

Not only does one of those tweets call Conor "concert", but when have you ever heard Frankie Edgar state he will take someone's soul? People can get a little sloppy when writing without a clear head, but these error-strewn tweets teeming with strange phrasing did appear rather suspicious at the time.

I understand the thought process behind it. But, even the accusation that McGregor is continually "ducking" Edgar seems a tad hasty given no announcement has been made for his next opponent and the Irishman has been the undisputed UFC featherweight champion for less than two weeks. Not to mention the fact "Frankie's" tweet - reeling off his résumé of wins - contains Chad Mendes' name, before asking who has McGregor beat? Well, he beat Mendes himself before knocking out one of the all-time P4P greats in Jose Aldo – a man who has defeated Edgar.

However, a hawk-eyed Twitter user named @GrabakaHitman spotted a strange anomaly in one of these online interactions between Edgar and his fans trying to ask him questions.

Frankie sounds serious — caposa (@GrabakaHitman)December 24, 2015

Frankie Edgar's manager Ali Abdel-Aziz appeared to answer as Edgar by accident after his own personal Twitter account handle was included in the original message sent from a fan. With the Twitter mobile app's functionality being capable to operate multiple accounts from one device, it looks like Abdelaziz slipped up. The tweet has since been removed from Abdel-Aziz's Twitter account.

Plenty of athletes have their management handle their social media accounts so this is not unique. But, Abdel-Aziz has courted plenty of controversy in the last few weeks as various accusations regarding his background surfaced, resulting in his swift exit from a senior position at MMA promotion World Series of Fighting.

He has also been heavily campaigning for Frankie Edgar to get the money fight versus McGregor – despite also being the manager of lightweight champion and potential McGregor opponent Rafael Dos Anjos.

Abdel-Aziz is fast becoming one of the more unpopular figureheads in MMA, as evidenced in the like/dislike ratio found on the above YouTube video. However, there are plenty of tweeters finding humor in the Egyptian's error: including McGregor's coach John Kavanagh.

Frankie Edgar's mentor Mark Henry appeared to have confirmed Abdel-Aziz's mistake by accident, before telling Kavanagh to focus on his fighter rather than social media as the coaches remind us why Twitter can be so much fun to follow when waking up on a mundane Christmas Eve morning.

It's understandable that Frankie Edgar feels obliged to take to social media and campaign for the featherweight title shot as McGregor talks about moving up and down in weight. After all, Edgar was passed up as an option for the interim belt before McGregor defeated Mendes. But, Edgar would be wise to keep it genuine: the match-up between the two sells itself.
