Trevor Bauer Trolls Blue Jays Fans Behind Dugout

It's safe to say that Trevor Bauer and the Toronto crowd will not be exchanging holiday cards.

When Trevor Bauer had to come out of his Game 3 start in Toronto because his drone-injured pinky turned into a blood geyser, the Rogers Centre crowd cheered pretty loudly as he left the mound. Bauer gave them a sarcastic tip of the cap and TBS analyst Ron Darling wondered whether it was right to cheer on an injury like that.

Giving the crowd the benefit of the doubt—a benefit it is by no means entitled to—it's hard to believe they were cheering the injury itself as opposed to what it meant: in a huge home game, the opposing starter was out after just two-thirds of an inning. (There's also the hockey tradition of cheering an injured player when he leaves the ice.) Regardless, fans probably felt like that was a series-changing moment. Hindsight being 20/20 and all, we know that it very much was not. The bullpen came on and for the most part shut down the potent Jays offense, and Cleveland is now one win away from the World Series.

The cheering obviously rankled Bauer, though, and he relished the opportunity to stick it to the home crowd at the end of the game, helpfully filling in fans behind the dugout on the updated series record. He then went at it some more on Twitter.

1) what a W!! 2) my cleats got a bit dirty. 3) loudest standing ovation I've gotten walking off the mound. pic.twitter.com/1VUozRBSaG

@JPritchhh all the ones by the dugout flipping me off and cursing at me seemed to be pretty disrespectful.

@VijaySetlur I taunt when taunted. Getting flipped off by the crowd started it. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Bauer is a pretty engaging athlete, so there is more where that came from on his feed, but that's the gist of it. He thought the crowd was clearly disrespectful as he left the mound, and that impression was confirmed by the fans he says were cursing him out behind the dugout throughout the game, so he shot back with the ultimate comeback: scoreboard.
