Fan Goes on Hilarious Life Journey for Home Run Ball

One fan turned a home run ball into a lesson in perseverance and pride in a job well done.

Slade Heathcott was called up about a week ago while Jacoby Ellsbury hangs out on the disabled list for a few days and hit his first Major League home run at Yankee Stadium on Monday. A wonderful moment to be sure, but one fan turned it from a personal milestone into a life lesson in perseverance and hunger.

Heathcott hit it into right field, not the cheapy, short-porch area of right field, either, and a mad dash ensued for the ball. A woman in a Yankees cap and clutching on to a plastic cup of beer went all out for it. It was her's to lose the whole time, and while we almost lost her, she never lost it. She went down immediately, spilling beer everywhere but still she powered on. Lunging along the row, from seat to seat, still, spilling beer everywhere, she looked to have lost her battle with gravity and motor function. She disappeared like Gandalf into the endless chasm of Moria, and for a time it looked like the Balrog had won.

But then, triumphantly, a hand emerges! And with it the ball, and a lesson for all to never give up. All who were witness reveled in the glory of a job…eventually done.
