Tony Romo Gets Pretty Bleak, Puts QB Controversy to Bed

Tony Romo read from a prepared statement discussing the rest of the season, and handed the Dallas Cowboys starting QB job to Dak Prescott once and for all.

Tony Romo appeared for a rare Tuesday press conference to say once and for all that the Dallas Cowboys are Dak Prescott's team. Calling his most recent injury—a broken bone in his back that has kept him off the field since the preseason—a "soul-crushing moment" that put him in "a dark place," Romo spoke for about five minutes and said that Prescott has "earned the right" to be the starting quarterback in Dallas. He could have made this much worse, but he saw what everyone else saw.

It was an odd sight, almost a self-eulogy, but Romo read from a prepared statement, with his eyes hidden under his cap, and spoke about how he remembered being the same young kid as Prescott and recalled all the people who helped him make his way and then…he just stepped aside.

"I'm not gonna allow this situation to negatively effect Dak, or this football team, by becoming a constant distraction. I think Dak knows I have his back, and I think I know that he has mine. Ultimately it's about the team."

It wasn't a retirement speech, though; Romo said the camaraderie of doing something great on a team is "why I still want to play and compete."
