Australian Olympic shooter Michael Diamond has had his gun licence suspended, after being charged with drink driving and a series of firearms offences.

The Guardian reports that the 44-year-old – winner of a gold medal in the men's trap at both the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics – was involved in an alleged domestic dispute at a home in Stockton Street, Port Stephens on Saturday night. Fairfax Media has reported that Diamond had an argument with his brother, before being arrested at around 21:30 local time.

When police officers from the Port Stephens Local Area Command approached Diamond, he was standing by his vehicle but refused to be breathalysed. Officers searched the vehicle, and found a shotgun and 150 rounds of ammunition.

Diamond was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where he underwent a breath test. He reportedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.159, more than three times over the legal limit.

He was subsequently charged with high-range drink driving, handling or using a firearm while under the use of alcohol and failing to keep a firearm safe. Both his gun and driving licences have been suspended.

A statement from Shooting Australia reads: "SA is still trying to ascertain all of the information relating to these allegations.

"We can confirm that Shooting Australia is working closely with Michael to support him and to ensure that his welfare is protected. We are also communicating regularly with the Australian Olympic Committee and our other stakeholders, and we will continue to do so."

Police have also said that a provisional apprehended domestic violence order has been made, and that an investigation into the incident is underway. Diamond's hopes of competing at Rio 2016 are now in doubt.
