Salvador Perez Catches Foul Ball Bare-handed after it Deflects off Wire

This was a great play, but unfortunately it didn't count. And that came back to burn the Royals.

This was correctly ruled a dead ball but, man, what a great play by Salvador Perez. Josh Donaldson hit a pop foul and Perez tracked it all the way back to the netting by the Toronto dugout and settled under it, ready to make the catch. Then it hit a wire holding up that netting and he still somehow managed to re-adjust and catch the ball with his bare hand. Home plate Laz Diaz immediately called it a dead ball because it struck the wiring, which is one of the universal ground rules in Major League Baseball.

Donaldson—who almost surely would have been out had the ball not hit the wiring—was able to beat out an infield single on the very next pitch, moved to second when Jose Bautista walked, and scored on an Edwin Encarnacion single to give Toronto a 2-0 lead. They took a 3-0 lead when the struggling Troy Tulowitzki hit a double to drive in Bautista.
