UCLA Advances on Controversial Goaltending Call

UCLA advances to the next round on a controversial goaltending call in the final seconds against SMU.

Trailing SMU 59-57 with about 12 seconds left in the game, UCLA's Bryce Alford launched a desperation three-pointer that SMU's Yanick Moreira tipped right near the rim and the referees called goaltending. It's really close, but it does not look like the ball was going to hit the rim, and it clearly had no chance of going in the cylinder, but UCLA was awarded the three points and with it the lead. After a brief stoppage, SMU took the ball up the court, down a point, and had two decent chances to win the game and missed both, badly.

NCAA National Coordinator of Officiating, John Adams, said this official made the call, and that he was probably 30 feet away from the rim when he did so. Adams naturally thought the ruling was the correct one.

UCLA, who most felt had no business being in the tournament in the first place, advances to the round of 32. Most will probably think they have no business being there, either.
