All Tests Negative for Stephen Piscotty After Scary Collision in Center Field

Cardinals left fielder Stephen Piscotty suffered a brain contusion after a scary collision with Peter Bourjos.

On Monday, Cardinals rookie left fielder Stephen Piscotty was involved in a scary collision with centerfielder Peter Bourjos in the seventh inning of the Cardinals' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. While both players were tracking down a fly ball hit by Josh Harrison, Piscotty appeared to stumble briefly, before diving head first for the ball. It appeared Piscotty's head may have struck Bourjos's knee or upper thigh, and he immediately went rigid, exhibiting the fencing response common after concussions.

Bourjos frantically waved for help as Piscotty was motionless for a few seconds and may have lost consciousness. He did not respond at all to Bourjos patting him on the stomach to try and wake him. But after a while you could begin to see some movement from his arms and upper body.

Medical staff sprinted out to center field to treat him and he was boarded and stretchered off the field and taken to a local hospital. The Cardinals later announced that he suffered a head contusion and would undergo further testing at the hospital. Those tests all come back negative and he was held overnight for observation.
