New York Islanders Score Twice in Three Seconds to Match NHL Record

So the Islanders can have nice things after all.

After surrendering a 3-0 lead in the third period of Wednesday's game against the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, the New York Islanders tied an NHL record with two goals in three seconds to cap off a roller coaster night at Barclays Center.

The Isles were up by three after the second period, but Pittsburgh responded with three straight goals in the third to tie it up. With 26.6 seconds left in the game, Anders Lee tipped home a Thomas Hickey point shot to put the Islanders up 4-3, and three seconds later, Nikolay Kulemin received the puck directly off the next faceoff, depositing it into the empty net and sealing a rare and much-needed win.

The two tallies with under 30 seconds left set a franchise record while tying an NHL record, accomplished only twice before. The only two other teams to score two goals in three seconds or less, according to statistician Eric Hornick, were the 2004 Minnesota Wild, and everyone's favorite defunct midwest franchise—the 1935 St. Louis Eagles.

The Isles have garnered attention for a lot of the wrong reasons this season, including the never-ending drama surrounding the job security of their head coach, while having to deal with the ongoing ice issues at the Barclays Center. They sit last place in the Metropolitan Division, have to figure out what they're going to do with captain John Tavares, and may be best to start over and rebuild.

But for one night—well, for three seconds at least—it was all good in Brooklyn.
