New Zealand League Goalie Decked Out in Full Gear Scores on Penalty Shot

The goaltender who was scored on should be absolutely ashamed of himself for allowing a guy with oven mitts on his hands to bury one past him.

A goalie scored on a penalty shot during a recent New Zealand league hockey game, and we're still trying to figure out how we feel about it. There's a lot of stuff going down over there that we're not quite used to, which is great, but watching something as unnatural as this may take some serious time to get over.

According to the Reddit user who posted the video, the rules in this league (a summer league that's a couple tiers below the top pro league) are, well, a little different. If a penalty is committed in the first two periods of play, a penalty shot is awarded rather than a power play. Whoever is fouled is able to take the shot, and since the call resulting in this penalty shot was for goaltender interference, this dude decked out in pads, a goalie stick and oversized pants, decided to take it himself.

The goaltender in red made his move with a decent head fake—and the execution was even better. He went forehand to stick side on the opposing goaltender, who should be absolutely ashamed of himself for allowing a guy with oven mitts on his hands to score on him.

This game took place between Les Cones (in white) and Les Coqs (in red). Les Cones is one of the greatest team names in any language or league, that's for sure.

At first glance, this league looks awful, but certainly makes up for it in the entertainment department. And the wackiness doesn't stop there, as the league has mixed in a few less drastic rule changes to keep the North American game fresh in the southern hemisphere.

"Some more interesting rules we have in the league are the defensive blue line is the icing line instead of the halfway line (red line). They allow line changes after icing (imo I don't really like the rule but sometimes it helps us out). If the puck hits the netting it's still live. Delay of games are treated as normal icing," says the Reddit user.

At least they got the most important rule right, though.

"If you're ever a dick on the ice you can be given a dick penalty. Which is treated like a two minute minor or penalty shot."

Looks like the 'Sean Avery' rule even made its way across the Pacific.
