This 1979 Track Pays Tribute to the Death Star’s Funk Master

If anyone deserves their own badass funk anthem it's the Dark Lord.

While it's widely assumed that Darth Vader was a fan of Venom, Mercyful Fate and other early forms of black metal, the Dark Lord was actually into nasty funk and more inclined to blast Bootsie Collins through the Death Star then he was King Diamond.

Instant Funk, a nine-piece funk unit from that galaxy far away known as Trenton, New Jersey, knew how much of a funk fiend Vader was and have paid tribute to him on "Dark Vader", a seven minute disco opus/romp.

Taken from their 1979, self-titled album on respected disco label Salsoul, the track obviously has some Funkadelic and Parliament heat but is cooked with some Galactic Empire grease.

The lyrics are a mixture of intergalactic empowerment, "a tall black man, entirely fearless / Came from a star, we know not where," with 70s funk cheese, "Flying through the speed of light, one minute he was there, the next he was out of sight," but the sinewy bass lines and snappy drums are gold.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars dance your ass off to this tribute to the man in black.
