Cleveland Cavaliers Fire Head Coach David Blatt Despite Superlative Record

You'd think 30-11 was good enough, but you'd be wrong.

Despite owning the best record in the Eastern Conference (30-11), head coach David Blatt was fired by the Cleveland Cavaliers today, according to an anonymous tip reported by USA Today. Assistant coach Tyronn Lue is being promoted to the position.

After coaching in Israel, Italy, Greece, and Russia since the mid-90s, Blatt made the move to the Cavs in 2014. It was his first NBA coaching gig. A month later, LeBron James announced that he was returning to Cleveland. Rumors swirled about a locker room beef between the two, but nevertheless, Blatt and James led the Cavaliers to the NBA Championships later that season. The Cavs fell to the defending champion Warriors on Monday, 132-98, but overall the 2015-16 season has looked promising for the team, who are still clear favorites to win their conference.

Blatt now finds himself in a rare class of coaches who were fired at the peak of a statistically superlative season. Other coaches fired at their peak include Claude Julien, who took the Devils to 47-24-8 before getting the pink slip, and Marty Schottenheimer, who led the Chargers to 14-2 before getting the axe. Sometimes great isn't good enough.
