John Oliver did his "John Oliver Dances on the Grave and Pisses on the Memory of [the most recent societal ill]" last night and closed his show with a very comprehensive breakdown of the insanity of publicly-funded stadiums. There's a little bit of everything here: great gags, compelling facts every sports fan should know, and the appropriate levels of incredulity for things like stadium-wide fishtanks and sentences like "the Smoothie King Center, home of the New Orleans Pelicans."The overarching theme, obviously, is that taxpayer money should not be spent on private sports teams, and those private sports teams should definitely not be playing poor in order to get these brand new shiny theme parks. So it was great to see him single out Marlins president and chief executive slimeball David Samson and Red Wings and Little Caesar's owner Mike Ilitch. Both teams received public money to build stadiums while, in the Marlins case, playing poor despite actually operating at a significant profit and, in the Red Wings case, being owned by a man worth $5.1 billion in a city that just went bankrupt.And of course, Oliver addressed the commonly-used lie of the "economic benefit" to the area from a new stadium.
