Former Colts Running Back Dead after Accidentally Shooting Himself

The gun was in a duffle bag and accidentally went off when he removed it from the trunk of his car.

Former Colts running back Zurlon Tipton died at the age of 26 on Tuesday after he accidentally shot himself in the stomach. Tipton was at a car dealership in Roseville, Michigan when a loaded gun he had stored in a duffle bag went off as he was removing the bag from the trunk of his car. It struck him in the stomach. No one else was injured.

Police initially expected Tipton to survive the injuries because he was reportedly alert and speaking to people as they tended to him and transported him to the hospital.

Tipton, who had made the Colts as an undrafted free agent from Central Michigan in 2014, was released by Indianapolis near the end of last season. He played in 6 games during his rookie season, and then 10 games in 2015. Shortly after his release, Tipton was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon when he fired a round from a Colt AR-15 during a confrontation regarding threatening messages from his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend.
