A night after Maple Leafs saviour Auston Matthews took the hockey world by storm with the greatest debut in NHL history, it was No. 2 overall pick Patrik Laine's turn to take the ice for the first time.

Laine, who went a pick after Matthews in the loaded 2016 draft, wasted no time winning over the Jets fan base, as the Finnish sniper went top shelf in the third period for a beauty first career goal. The 18-year-old also added an assist in Winnipeg's 5-4 overtime win over the Hurricanes.

Laine and Matthews entered the draft with enormous expectations, and so far they've passed every test with flying colours. Both impressed at the World Cup of Hockey against the best competition on the planet before lighting it up in their NHL debuts.

These two are going to be linked to each other all season as they battle it out for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league's best rookie. And we won't have to wait long to see them go up against each other, as Matthews' Leafs travel to Winnipeg next Wednesday. That's already looking like must-see TV.
