John Tavares Scores Game-Winning Goal 15 Seconds into Overtime

John Tavares scored the game-winning goal for the Islanders 15 seconds into overtime, sending the home crowd into hysterics.

The last year of playoff hockey in Nassau Coliseum is off to a banging start. The New York Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 (and took a 2-1 series lead) just 15 seconds into overtime. The Islanders dominated the first two periods of the game and finally got on the board halfway through the second period on Kyle Okposo's second goal of the playoffs. The Capitals hung around, though, and tied it up in the third period on Nicklas Backstrom's deflection. Alex Ovechkin loved the shit out of it and it seemed like maybe the tide was turning.

The teams skated to a 1-1 tie for the remainder of regulation and amped up home crowd had to keep waiting for the other shoe to drop just a little bit longer. The Islanders won the face off to open the overtime period and immediately sent it into the zone and got to work. Braden Holtby made a couple of nice saves in the ensuing flurry, but Tavares finally snuck one through and the place went crazy.
