MLB Investigating Yu Darvish in Connection With his Brother's Gambling Ring in Japan

Yu Darvish is being investigated by MLB in connection with his brother's gambling ring in Japan.

Last October, Yu Darvish's brother Sho was arrested in Japan for allegedly running an illegal gambling ring that took bets on Nipon Professional Baseball games as well as Major League Baseball games. While Yu Darvish has not been charged with anything associated with his brother's activities, the Japan Times has confirmed that MLB is investigating any possible connection.

Sho Darvish was arrested after a three-year investigation.

He is alleged to have accepted some 1,850 wagers valued at ¥10,000 each on pro games in both North America and Japan. It is still unclear whether or not any of the bets were taken on games involving the Rangers.

MLB has not said to what extent they are investigating the matter, but VP of communications Michael Teeven told the Times that "We are aware of this situation and are looking into it, per our standard protocols." Strangely, MLB denied knowledge of Sho Darvish's arrest despite the report being picked up by numerous stateside outlets at the time. When pressed for more information regarding potential inquiries, Teeven would not offer anything other than to say "Our efforts are ongoing, and as such I am not at liberty to go into what they entail."

Update: Yu Darvish has released a statement denying any involvement.
