Mariners Turn Crazy Triple Play

The Mariners recorded one of the weirder triple plays you are likely to ever see.

The Mariners recorded their first triple play since 2010, and the 11th in franchise history today against the Blue Jays and it was a weird one. With runners on first and third and no one out in the fourth inning, Ryan Goins hit a ground ball to first base, where he was easily retired for the first out. Mark Trumbo then fired to shortstop Brad Miller to get Kevin Pillar, who got himself caught in a rundown to let Ezequiel Carrera try to score from third. Miller ran right at Carrera, cutting off third base, and catcher Mike Zunino ran him back to third base.

While this was all happening, Pillar ran all the way to third, so both Carrera and Pillar were on third base by the end of the double pickle. Ordinarily, under the rules, Carrera is entitled to the bag, and Pillar would be retired as the second out of the inning and the play would be over. And that is almost what happened, but Carrera slipped and lost contact with the bag for a brief second. Zunino promptly tagged him and recorded one of the wackier triple plays you're likely to see.
